The club's only other really successful period came in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Under the leadership of Joe Mercer and the infamous Malcolm Allison, they managed to win the League Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup. Indeed, in living up to their reputation as Manchester's second team, their greatest success has actually come in the second tier of English football, winning the title on an impressively humble seven occasions.
To be fair, however, the club have won the FA Cup five times (1904, 1934, 1956, 1969 and 2011) and they have also been runners-up in this competition four times. Nonetheless, having lost the 1981 cup final, the club's fortunes took a rather unfortunate nosedive. In 1998, in fact, the club were relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.
Fortunately for City's fans, the decline in fortunes didn't last that long and the club soon fought their way back to top-flight football, where they have remained ever since. Indeed, after an influx of very expensive star players the team finally qualified for the Champion's League for the first time and won their first trophy - the FA Cup - since their European Cup Winner's triumph in 1970. Man City odds in every competition are likely to be fairly low for many years to come.
